Because, What Winter?!

Spring Blossoms

February in Portland does not usually look like this.

But in stark contrast to the eastern half of the country, winter in the Pacific Northwest was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it affair this year. Month after month, we have set records for warm temperatures, and snow has been nonexistent. Even in the Cascades, where it is sorely needed. The snowpack is sitting at about 10% of normal, which could mean drought this summer – only time will tell.

So when we took a walk along the Willamette River in downtown Portland last weekend, we weren’t at all surprised to see blossoms popping up on trees, three weeks ahead of schedule.

Forget what the calendar says. Welcome, spring.

      1. Like I said……….come and visit and you can play in the snow all you want!! If you climb over the huge snowbank in my front yard, you will be in snow up to your waist! In fact, I’ll even let you shovel all the snow you want! And just for kicks, if you want to shovel off my roof, feel free! Hahaha! I guess we all got our comeuppance, considering we thought we were lucking out by not having snow for almost 3 months! But if we get a storm that’s all rain any time soon, we will be in BIG trouble!

  1. Mark, oddly enough, even though much of the Northeast got hit with a lot of snow, winter in Philadelphia this year has been pretty boring when it comes to snowfall. We’ve had a few days of it, but by the next day it all melts. We had MUCH more last year. However, it’s been VERY cold. Like you, I prefer a HEARTY winter with LOTS of snow. It’s been a very strange winter which I may be posting about on my blog this week.

    Great photograph!

  2. We had a pretty mild winter this year too! But we had more snow than you – as a matter of fact it snowed just last Tuesday! Of course it was all gone by the next day!
